Tacoma, Pierce County & the South Sound: what shapes the choice here
Pierce County has a deep Advantage menu and two big systems that each sign their own contracts: MultiCare on one side, Virginia Mason Franciscan on the other. A plan that includes Tacoma General may exclude St. Joseph, and Gig Harbor and Puyallup residents often find their nearest hospital in one system and their specialist in the other.
The military layer is bigger here than anywhere in Washington. Joint Base Lewis-McChord supports more than 90,000 family members, veterans and retirees, most of whom reach 65 with TRICARE For Life, and the VA’s American Lake campus serves veterans without it. Our JBLM page walks through the TFL-and-Medicare calculation.
Local plans to know: Pierce County’s care is split between MultiCare and Virginia Mason Franciscan, which contract with different Advantage plans. A very large share of residents reach 65 with TRICARE For Life from JBLM, which changes what “best plan” means: for a TFL family a Medigap policy and a Part D plan are usually redundant.
Counties: Pierce.
