Swedish Redmond and EvergreenHealth close by, Overlake and Kaiser in Bellevue, UW across the lake — and a retiree population from Microsoft and the tech campuses for whom the IRMAA surcharge is the Medicare surprise.
What to know before you compare plans in King County
Redmond’s care is Eastside care: Swedish Redmond and EvergreenHealth for primary and urgent care, Overlake and Kaiser Permanente Washington in Bellevue, and UW Medicine or Virginia Mason in Seattle for the rest. King County’s deep Advantage menu means nearly every combination exists, and the work is confirming that a plan which includes your Eastside doctor also includes the Seattle specialist.
Redmond’s other Medicare issue is income. Retirees from Microsoft and the companies around it routinely trip the IRMAA surcharge on a final year of vested stock, a house sale or a Roth conversion, and the two-year lookback catches people who thought they had planned it. We look at the income side alongside the plan side.

When you can enroll
Turning 65? Your Initial Enrollment Period is the 7 months around your birthday. Already on Medicare? The Annual Election Period is Oct 15–Dec 7, and Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment runs Jan 1–Mar 31. Already have a Medigap policy? Washington lets you change it any time of year.
Your options
Which kind of plan fits you in Redmond?
Medicare Advantage
All-in-one Part C plans, often $0 premium, that use a local network — so whether UW Medicine, Providence, MultiCare or Kaiser is in it matters as much as the price.
Medigap pairs with Original Medicare and lets you see any provider in the country that accepts Medicare — and in Washington you can change plans any time.
King County typically has many Medicare Advantage plans, every Medigap carrier in Washington, and the full Part D lineup. Availability is set by ZIP code and changes each plan year; we compare what is offered at your address.
My last year at Microsoft had a lot of stock income. Will that affect my Medicare premium?
It can. IRMAA is based on your tax return from two years earlier, so a high-income final year can raise your Part B and Part D premiums for a year after you retire. If your income has since dropped, Social Security can be asked to use this year’s income instead (Form SSA-44). Our costs page has the chart and a calculator.
How much does your help cost?
Nothing. Independent agents are paid by the carriers when you enroll, so comparing plans and reviewing your coverage each year is free to you.
