Overlake at the center, Kaiser and Swedish close by, UW and Virginia Mason across the lake — and some of the highest retirement incomes in the country, which makes IRMAA the surprise that arrives with the Medicare card.
What to know before you compare plans in King County
Eastside Medicare is a network question with a lot of good answers. Overlake Medical Center is Bellevue’s own hospital, EvergreenHealth is minutes north in Kirkland, Kaiser Permanente Washington has a Bellevue medical center, Swedish has Issaquah and Redmond, and UW Medicine and Virginia Mason are a bridge away. Each contracts with some Advantage plans and not others, and King County’s menu is deep enough that a plan exists for almost any combination; the work is finding it.
The Eastside’s other Medicare issue is income. Retirees from Microsoft, Amazon and the tech companies routinely trip the IRMAA surcharge on a year of vested stock or a house sale two years before enrolling, and a Roth conversion at the wrong time does the same. We walk through the income side with the plan side, and, if the numbers have dropped since, help with the Social Security appeal.

When you can enroll
Turning 65? Your Initial Enrollment Period is the 7 months around your birthday. Already on Medicare? The Annual Election Period is Oct 15–Dec 7, and Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment runs Jan 1–Mar 31. Already have a Medigap policy? Washington lets you change it any time of year.
Your options
Which kind of plan fits you in Bellevue?
Medicare Advantage
All-in-one Part C plans, often $0 premium, that use a local network — so whether UW Medicine, Providence, MultiCare or Kaiser is in it matters as much as the price.
Medigap pairs with Original Medicare and lets you see any provider in the country that accepts Medicare — and in Washington you can change plans any time.
King County typically has the widest choice in Washington: many Medicare Advantage plans, every Medigap carrier in the state, and all standalone Part D plans. We compare what is offered at your address and which Eastside systems each plan includes.
I sold my house last year. Will that raise my Medicare premium?
It can. IRMAA is based on your tax return from two years earlier, and a large capital gain can push you into a higher tier for a year. If your income has since dropped, Social Security can be asked to use this year’s income instead (Form SSA-44). Our costs page has the chart and a calculator.
How much does your help cost?
Nothing. Independent agents are paid by the carriers when you enroll, so comparing plans and reviewing your coverage each year is free to you.
