Wilmington & the Cape Fear Coast: what shapes the choice here

The Cape Fear coast is a newcomer’s Medicare market. Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center is the hospital for the whole region, Brunswick and Pender have Novant community hospitals, and the Advantage menu in New Hanover and Brunswick is moderate. The question most people bring us is not which plan is cheapest but whether the plan they had in Ohio, New York or New Jersey still works here — usually it does not, beyond emergencies, and the move itself is the window to fix that.

The other local rule is weather. Hurricanes Florence and Helene both produced Medicare disaster Special Enrollment Periods in North Carolina; if a storm is declared here and you missed an enrollment deadline because of it, that window reopens.

What to know locally: Brunswick County’s St. James and Carolina Shores keep landing on national best-places-to-retire lists, and most of the people arriving are already on Medicare from another state. Moving here opens a Special Enrollment Period for Advantage and Part D; a Medigap policy usually comes with you. A FEMA-declared hurricane opens another.

Counties: New Hanover, Brunswick, Pender, Columbus.

Frequently asked questions

Which Medicare plans are available in Wilmington and Brunswick County?

New Hanover and Brunswick counties typically offer a moderate Medicare Advantage menu, every Medigap carrier in North Carolina, and the full Part D lineup. Pender and Columbus have fewer Advantage plans. We compare what is sold at your address.

I just moved to Brunswick County from another state. What happens to my plan?

Moving outside your Advantage or Part D plan’s service area opens a Special Enrollment Period to pick a plan sold in your new county. A Medigap policy stays in force wherever you live, though the premium may be re-rated to North Carolina. See our Moving to North Carolina guide.

How much does your help cost?

Nothing. Independent agents are paid by the carriers when you enroll, so comparing plans and reviewing your coverage each year is free to you.
