Medicare in the region

Sandhills & Fayetteville: what shapes the choice here

The Sandhills are two Medicare markets. Around Fayetteville, a large share of people reach 65 with TRICARE For Life waiting, which makes a Medigap policy and a Part D plan usually unnecessary and turns the question into whether an MA-only Advantage plan’s dental and vision are worth having. Around Pinehurst and Southern Pines, the question is the one every newcomer asks: which of the plans sold in Moore County includes FirstHealth and the specialists in Raleigh or Chapel Hill they may be referred to.

South and west, Robeson, Scotland and Richmond counties have thinner menus and lean on one hospital apiece; Original Medicare with a Medigap policy covers all of them without a network.

What to know locally: Cumberland County has one of the largest TRICARE For Life populations in the country, and Womack sees retirees on a space-available basis that Medicare plans do not change. Moore County is the opposite case: retirees from everywhere, FirstHealth Moore Regional as the referral hospital for a 15-county region, and a relocation Special Enrollment Period on nearly every new arrival.

Counties: Cumberland, Moore, Hoke, Harnett, Lee, Robeson, Scotland, Richmond, Montgomery, Sampson, Bladen.

Questions from the Sandhills

Frequently asked questions

Which Medicare plans are available in Fayetteville and Pinehurst?

Cumberland and Moore counties typically offer a moderate to wide Medicare Advantage menu, every Medigap carrier in North Carolina, and the full Part D lineup. Robeson, Scotland and the rural counties have fewer Advantage plans. We compare what is sold at your address.

I have TRICARE For Life. Which plan should I look at?

With TFL you already have a supplement-like layer and creditable drug coverage, so a Medigap policy and a Part D plan are usually unnecessary. An MA-only Advantage plan can add dental or vision without duplicating drug coverage. See our Fort Bragg and Veterans pages.

How much does your help cost?

Nothing. Independent agents are paid by the carriers when you enroll, so comparing plans and reviewing your coverage each year is free to you.
