Medicare in the region

Outer Banks & the Northeast: what shapes the choice here

The Outer Banks and the Albemarle region are the part of North Carolina where Medicare Advantage menus are shortest and the nearest specialist may be in another state. Outer Banks Health in Nags Head and Sentara Albemarle in Elizabeth City handle the everyday; ECU Health in Greenville and the Hampton Roads systems in Virginia handle the rest. That geography is why Original Medicare with a Medigap policy is so common out here: it works at every one of those hospitals.

Dare and Currituck also draw retirees from Virginia and the Northeast, so the relocation Special Enrollment Period comes up constantly, and so does the hurricane rule. We serve every town in the region by phone and video.

What to know locally: A lot of northeastern North Carolina care crosses into Virginia — Chesapeake, Norfolk, Virginia Beach — and an Advantage HMO sold in Dare or Currituck County may not include those providers. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy works on both sides of the line without a network question.

Counties: Dare, Currituck, Camden, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Chowan, Gates, Hertford, Bertie, Tyrrell, Hyde.

Questions from the Northeast

Frequently asked questions

Which Medicare plans are available on the Outer Banks?

Dare and Currituck counties typically offer a short Medicare Advantage menu, every Medigap carrier in North Carolina, and the full Part D lineup. Availability changes each plan year; we compare what is sold at your address.

Can I use Virginia doctors with a North Carolina plan?

With Original Medicare and a Medigap policy, yes — any provider in the country that accepts Medicare. With an Advantage plan only if those providers are in the plan’s network, which varies; some PPOs cover out-of-network care at higher cost. We confirm before you enroll.

How much does your help cost?

Nothing. Independent agents are paid by the carriers when you enroll, so comparing plans and reviewing your coverage each year is free to you.
