Medicare in Chapel Hill

What to know before you compare plans in Orange County

Orange County offers a wide Medicare Advantage menu, every Medigap carrier in North Carolina and the full Part D lineup. UNC Hospitals and UNC Health’s clinics dominate local care, and Duke is ten miles away in Durham. Effective January 1, 2026, UNC Health is out of network with Humana, WellCare and HCSC (formerly Cigna) Medicare Advantage plans; State Health Plan retirees on Humana’s group plan kept their access. Alignment Health sells in Orange and Chatham counties for 2026.

Chapel Hill and Carrboro also have a large university-retiree population on the State Health Plan, and a growing one in Chatham County’s Fearrington and Briar Chapel communities arriving from other states. We compare what is sold at your ZIP code and confirm UNC or Duke before you enroll.

Frequently asked questions

Which Medicare plans are available in Chapel Hill?

Orange County typically offers a wide Medicare Advantage menu, every Medigap carrier in North Carolina, and the full Part D lineup, set by ZIP code and changing each plan year.

UNC Hospitals left my Advantage plan. What are my options?

For 2026 UNC Health is out of network with Humana, WellCare and HCSC (Cigna) Advantage plans. A hospital leaving a plan’s network is not the same as a plan leaving your county. The Annual Election Period (October 15 to December 7) and, for current Advantage members, the January 1 to March 31 open enrollment let you move to a plan your hospital accepts or back to Original Medicare; a plan that actually withdraws from your county also gives you a Special Enrollment Period and, in most cases, a guaranteed-issue right to a Medigap policy. We read the notice with you and tell you which one you have.

How much does your help cost?

Nothing. Independent agents are paid by the carriers when you enroll, so comparing plans and reviewing your coverage each year is free to you.
