The Triad: what shapes the choice here
The Triad is three hospital systems and three cities that do not quite overlap. Greensboro and Burlington are Cone Health country; Winston-Salem is split between Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and Novant Health Forsyth; High Point leans on Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist High Point Medical Center. The Advantage menu is deep in Guilford and Forsyth and moderate in the counties north toward Virginia.
Because the systems sit so close together, Triad retirees often use more than one, which is where an HMO network bites and where a PPO or a Medigap policy earns its keep. We check every doctor you use, not just the primary.
What to know locally: Cone Health became part of Risant Health, the Kaiser Permanente-backed group, on December 3, 2024, keeping its name and board; Wake Forest Baptist is part of Atrium Health. Each still contracts separately with each Advantage plan, and Alignment Health sells in Forsyth, Guilford, Davidson and Davie counties for 2026.
Counties: Guilford, Forsyth, Davidson, Randolph, Alamance, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, Yadkin, Davie, Caswell.
