Western North Carolina & the Mountains: what shapes the choice here

Western North Carolina Medicare is a distance problem with one big hospital in the middle. Asheville has Mission, the Charles George VA and a moderate Advantage menu; Hendersonville has UNC Health Pardee and AdventHealth; Boone has Watauga Medical Center. The counties between them may be an hour or more from a hospital, and an Advantage network that looks fine on paper can mean a long drive in practice, which is why so many mountain retirees keep Original Medicare with a Medigap policy.

Helene changed the region in ways that still show: closed roads, relocated clinics, neighbours who moved. If you moved in or out of the disaster counties, or your address changed, that itself opens a Special Enrollment Period. We work the whole region by phone and video, so the drive to us is zero.

What to know locally: Mission Hospital, owned by HCA, is the region’s tertiary hospital and the one most mountain referrals end at; whether it is in your plan’s network decides a lot. After Hurricane Helene in September 2024, Medicare opened a disaster Special Enrollment Period for 25 western counties that ran to February 16, 2025 — the same rule applies to any future FEMA-declared disaster here.

Counties: Buncombe, Henderson, Haywood, Transylvania, Jackson, Macon, Swain, Graham, Cherokee, Clay, Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Avery, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, McDowell, Polk.

Questions from Western NC

Frequently asked questions

Which Medicare plans are available in Asheville and the mountains?

Buncombe and Henderson counties typically offer a moderate Medicare Advantage menu, every Medigap carrier in North Carolina, and the full Part D lineup. The far-western and high-country counties have fewer Advantage plans. We compare what is sold at your address.

Is there still a Hurricane Helene enrollment period?

The Helene Special Enrollment Period for the 25 declared counties ended February 16, 2025. The rule behind it stands: a FEMA-declared emergency or major disaster opens a Special Enrollment Period for people in the declared area who missed another enrollment window, running through two months after the incident period ends. If a new declaration comes, call us and we will confirm the dates.

How much does your help cost?

Nothing. Independent agents are paid by the carriers when you enroll, so comparing plans and reviewing your coverage each year is free to you.
