Medicare in the region
Eastern North Carolina is hospital-town country. Greenville anchors it with ECU Health Medical Center, the referral hospital for the whole east; New Bern has CarolinaEast, Jacksonville has Onslow Memorial and the Naval Medical Center, Goldsboro has Wayne Memorial and the Seymour Johnson clinic. Advantage menus are moderate in Pitt, Craven and Onslow and thinner in the farm counties, and the 2026 CarolinaEast network exit showed how much a single hospital’s contract can matter here.
The military layer is large: Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point Marine retirees, Seymour Johnson Air Force retirees, and veterans using the Fayetteville Coastal VA’s clinics along the coast. TRICARE For Life changes the calculation entirely; see our base pages.
What to know locally: CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern left Blue Cross NC’s Medicare Advantage network on July 1, 2026 and has said it intends to leave UnitedHealthcare’s, though that exit was pushed back by an extension; CarolinaEast’s physician practices stayed in network. If CarolinaEast is your hospital, the plan you hold matters more this year than the premium.

CarolinaEast Medical Center left Blue Cross NC’s Advantage network on July 1, 2026; emergency care there is still covered as in-network, and CarolinaEast Physicians stayed in network. A hospital leaving a plan’s network is not the same as a plan leaving your county. The Annual Election Period (October 15 to December 7) and, for current Advantage members, the January 1 to March 31 open enrollment let you move to a plan your hospital accepts or back to Original Medicare; a plan that actually withdraws from your county also gives you a Special Enrollment Period and, in most cases, a guaranteed-issue right to a Medigap policy. We read the notice with you and tell you which one you have.
