The Foothills: what shapes the choice here
The Foothills sit between the Charlotte and Triad menus and the mountain ones. Hickory has two hospitals that contract separately — the public Catawba Valley Medical Center and Duke LifePoint’s Frye Regional — so a plan that includes one may exclude the other. Morganton and Valdese are UNC Health Blue Ridge, which left three Advantage networks for 2026; Shelby is Atrium; Lenoir is UNC Health Caldwell.
Advantage menus are moderate in Catawba and Burke and thinner toward Wilkes and Rutherford. For anyone who uses hospitals in both Hickory and Charlotte, a PPO or a Medigap policy avoids the network question entirely.
What to know locally: UNC Health Blue Ridge in Morganton is part of the 2026 UNC Health network exit — out of network with Humana, WellCare and HCSC (Cigna) Advantage plans from January 1, 2026. Catawba, Burke, Caldwell, Alexander, Cleveland, Rutherford and Wilkes were all in the Hurricane Helene disaster declaration, so the disaster Special Enrollment Period applied here too.
Counties: Catawba, Burke, Caldwell, Alexander, Cleveland, Rutherford, Wilkes.
