Medicare in Raleigh
Wake County offers dozens of Medicare Advantage plans, every Medigap carrier in North Carolina and the full Part D lineup. Care is split three ways: WakeMed in Raleigh and Cary, UNC Health’s Rex hospital, and Duke Raleigh. Each contracts on its own terms, and for 2026 UNC Health — Rex included — is out of network with Humana, WellCare and HCSC (Cigna) Advantage plans. Experience Health, the Blue Cross NC and Duke HMO, uses Duke and WakeMed Key Community Care providers.
Raleigh is also state-government country, and a large share of retirees here are on the State Health Plan’s Humana group Medicare Advantage plan, which kept its UNC access. Whether to stay on it or move to an individual plan is a question with its own arithmetic; we walk through it with the plan’s documents in front of us.
