Medicare in Waimea (Kamuela)
Waimea (the post office calls it Kamuela) has Hawaii County’s Medicare menu: Kaiser Permanente Senior Advantage for most of the county, HMSA’s neighbor island Akamai Advantage plans, some national carriers, every Medigap company licensed in Hawaii and the full Part D lineup. Queen’s North Hawaii Community Hospital, a 35-bed rural hospital in the Queen’s system, is the town’s hospital; Kohala Hospital in Kapaau serves North Kohala; Kona Community Hospital and Hilo Benioff are each about an hour away.
Being in the Queen’s system matters here: a referral from North Hawaii to Queen’s Punchbowl is the normal path for anything the rural hospital does not do, and whether your plan covers that path, and the flight, is the question we answer before you enroll.
