What to know before you compare plans in Honolulu County
Pearl City and Aiea have Honolulu County’s full Medicare menu, and Pali Momi Medical Center in Aiea is the community hospital, contracting through HMSA Akamai Advantage and the national carriers. Kaiser members are a short drive from Moanalua Medical Center. Tripler Army Medical Center, just up the hill, sees military retirees on a space-available basis under TRICARE rules; Medicare does not pay there.
Because so many families here are Navy and Air Force retirees, the “best” plan is often simply Original Medicare with TRICARE For Life and nothing else. For everyone else we compare Advantage against a Medigap policy with your doctors, prescriptions and travel in front of us.

When you can enroll
Turning 65? Your Initial Enrollment Period is the 7 months around your birthday. Already on Medicare? The Annual Election Period is Oct 15–Dec 7, and Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment runs Jan 1–Mar 31. Moving to another island or losing a plan opens a Special Enrollment Period.
Your options
Which kind of plan fits you in Pearl City?
Medicare Advantage
All-in-one Part C plans, often $0 premium, that use a local network — in Hawaii that usually means choosing between Kaiser, HMSA and a few national carriers, island by island.
Medigap pairs with Original Medicare and lets you see any provider that accepts Medicare — Queen’s, Straub, Hilo Benioff, or a specialist on the mainland.
Honolulu County typically offers Medicare Advantage plans from Kaiser Permanente, HMSA and national carriers, every Medigap company licensed in Hawaii, and the full Part D lineup, set by county and changing each plan year.
Does Medicare pay at Tripler?
No. Tripler sees military retirees on a space-available basis under TRICARE rules, and Medicare does not pay there. Most Pearl Harbor retirees pair TRICARE For Life with civilian care at Pali Momi, Queen’s or Kaiser.
How much does your help cost?
Nothing. Independent agents are paid by the carriers when you enroll, so comparing plans and reviewing your coverage each year is free to you.
