Medicare in Lihue
Kauai County’s Medicare menu is the shortest in the state: HMSA’s neighbor island Akamai Advantage plans and a small number of national-carrier plans, every Medigap company licensed in Hawaii and the full Part D lineup. Kaiser Permanente Senior Advantage is not sold on Kauai. Wilcox Medical Center, part of Hawaii Pacific Health, is the island’s main hospital and contracts through HMSA and the national plans; any Medigap policy covers it without a network.
Anything Wilcox does not do means a 35-minute flight to Honolulu, usually to Queen’s or Straub. A Medigap policy covers that trip’s care without a referral rule; an HMSA neighbor island plan includes interisland travel help when HMSA refers you.
