The plantation town between the pineapple fields and Schofield Barracks has its own community hospital, the county’s full plan menu, and generations of Army retirees.
What to know before you compare plans in Honolulu County
Wahiawa has Honolulu County’s full Medicare menu and Wahiawa General Hospital in town, with Pali Momi and the Honolulu hospitals down the H-2 for anything more specialized and Kaiser’s Moanalua Medical Center for Kaiser members. Whitmore Village and the North Shore communities from Haleiwa to Kahuku look to Wahiawa first; Kahuku Medical Center is the North Shore’s critical-access hospital.
Schofield Barracks is next door, and its retirees fill the town. For an Army family with TRICARE For Life a Medigap policy and Part D plan are usually redundant; for a veteran without TFL who uses the Matsunaga VA, enrolling in Part B on time is the decision that matters. Our Schofield Barracks page covers both.

When you can enroll
Turning 65? Your Initial Enrollment Period is the 7 months around your birthday. Already on Medicare? The Annual Election Period is Oct 15–Dec 7, and Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment runs Jan 1–Mar 31. Moving to another island or losing a plan opens a Special Enrollment Period.
Your options
Which kind of plan fits you in Wahiawa?
Medicare Advantage
All-in-one Part C plans, often $0 premium, that use a local network — in Hawaii that usually means choosing between Kaiser, HMSA and a few national carriers, island by island.
Medigap pairs with Original Medicare and lets you see any provider that accepts Medicare — Queen’s, Straub, Hilo Benioff, or a specialist on the mainland.
Honolulu County typically offers Medicare Advantage plans from Kaiser Permanente, HMSA and national carriers, every Medigap company licensed in Hawaii, and the full Part D lineup, set by county and changing each plan year.
Is Wahiawa General in my Advantage plan’s network?
It depends on the plan and the year. With Original Medicare and a Medigap policy there is no network to check. We confirm your hospital and doctors are in-network before you enroll.
How much does your help cost?
Nothing. Independent agents are paid by the carriers when you enroll, so comparing plans and reviewing your coverage each year is free to you.
