Central Oahu & the North Shore: what shapes the choice here
Central Oahu is plantation country turned suburb: Mililani’s planned neighborhoods, Wahiawa’s old town, and the North Shore’s small communities from Haleiwa to Kahuku. Residents have Honolulu County’s full Medicare menu, and most hospital care runs to Wahiawa General, Pali Momi in Aiea, or the big Honolulu hospitals down the H-2.
Schofield Barracks sits in the middle of it, and so do its retirees. For an Army family with TRICARE For Life, a Medigap policy and a Part D plan are usually redundant; for a veteran without TFL who uses the Matsunaga VA, the Part B timing rule is the one that matters. Our Schofield Barracks page walks through both.
Local plans to know: The menu is Honolulu County’s. What is different here is the military share: Schofield Barracks and Wheeler Army Airfield have filled Wahiawa and Mililani with Army retirees for generations, and TRICARE For Life changes what “best plan” means for them. Wahiawa General is the community hospital; Kahuku Medical Center is the North Shore’s critical-access hospital.
Counties: Honolulu (Central Oahu and the North Shore: Mililani, Mililani Mauka, Wahiawa, Whitmore Village, Waipio, Haleiwa, Waialua, Sunset Beach, Kahuku, Laie).
