Medicare help in Los Alamos, New Mexico
Los Alamos has its own 47-bed hospital, a large population of lab retirees with federal or contractor retiree coverage, and Santa Fe and Albuquerque down the hill for specialty care.
What to know before you compare plans in Los Alamos County
Los Alamos County offers a moderate Advantage menu, every Medigap carrier in New Mexico and the full Part D lineup. Los Alamos Medical Center, the county’s only hospital, handles emergency, surgical and inpatient care; Christus St. Vincent in Santa Fe and the Albuquerque systems handle the rest, which an Advantage network may or may not include.
The lab’s retirees are the local wrinkle: many reach 65 with a federal or contractor retiree plan, which changes whether to take Part B and whether a Medigap policy adds anything. A lump-sum payout in 2024 can also push you into an IRMAA tier for 2026. We compare with your retiree plan’s paperwork in hand.

When you can enroll
Turning 65? Your Initial Enrollment Period is the 7 months around your birthday. Already on Medicare? The Annual Election Period is Oct 15–Dec 7, and Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment runs Jan 1–Mar 31. A plan leaving your county opens a Special Enrollment Period, and from January 1, 2027, New Mexico adds a 60-day Medigap birthday window.
Your options
Which kind of plan fits you in Los Alamos?
Medicare Advantage
All-in-one Part C plans, often $0 premium, that use a local network — so your hospital system, your county and your prescriptions matter, and so does whether the carrier will still be here next year.
Medigap pairs with Original Medicare and lets you see any provider nationwide that accepts Medicare — UNM, Christus St. Vincent, a specialist in El Paso or Denver, or the clinic in your county seat.
Los Alamos County typically offers a moderate Medicare Advantage menu, every Medigap carrier in New Mexico, and the full Part D lineup, set by ZIP code and changing each plan year.
I have a lab retiree health plan. Do I still need Part B?
Usually, yes — most retiree plans pay secondary to Medicare once you are eligible and expect you to enroll in Part B, and the late penalty is permanent. Bring the plan’s Medicare coordination pages and we will confirm before you decide.
How much does your help cost?
Nothing. Independent agents are paid by the carriers when you enroll, so comparing plans and reviewing your coverage each year is free to you.
