Central Mountains & the Tularosa Basin: what shapes the choice here
The central mountains hold two very different Medicare communities. Alamogordo and the Tularosa Basin are Air Force country, where TRICARE For Life and the VA shape the decision; Ruidoso and Lincoln County are second-home country, where a plan chosen in Lubbock or Midland has to work in the mountains too. Socorro and Catron counties, west across the Rio Grande, are among the emptiest in the state, and a specialist means Albuquerque.
Across all four counties the practical question is the same: does the plan’s network reach the hospital you would actually use, and the city you would be referred to — Albuquerque, Las Cruces or El Paso? A Medigap policy answers yes everywhere; an Advantage plan answers county by county, and we check before you enroll.
What to watch: Alamogordo’s Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center — shared by Holloman’s military community and civilians since 1999, and acquired by CHRISTUS Health effective July 1, 2026 — anchors the basin; Ruidoso’s Lincoln County Medical Center serves the mountain resort towns that fill with Texas retirees. Catron County has no hospital. The 2024 South Fork and Salt fires around Ruidoso displaced thousands of residents, and Medicare gives a Special Enrollment Period to anyone a declared disaster kept from enrolling on time.
Counties: Otero, Lincoln, Socorro, Catron.
