Sumter is Shaw Air Force Base’s town: a large Air Force retiree community on TRICARE For Life, Prisma Health Tuomey as the hospital, and Columbia’s systems an hour west.
What to know before you compare plans in Sumter County
Sumter County offers a moderate Advantage menu, every Medigap carrier in South Carolina and the full Part D lineup. Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital is the hospital in town and contracts with some plans and not others; for specialty care many residents drive to Columbia, and whether a plan’s network reaches both is the first thing we check.
Because so many Sumter residents carry TRICARE For Life from Shaw, the “best” plan here is often an MA-only Advantage plan for dental and vision, or simply Original Medicare with TFL and nothing else. Veterans without TFL use the Columbia VA system, and for them Part B timing is the rule that matters.
Care close to home
Major care in the area includes:
Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital
Shaw Air Force Base 20th Medical Group (TRICARE)
Columbia VA Health Care System
Columbia-area systems (Prisma, Lexington Medical Center, MUSC Health)
Plan networks differ — we check that your doctors and hospital are covered before you enroll.

Your options
Which kind of plan fits you in Sumter?
Medicare Advantage
All-in-one Part C plans, often $0 premium, that use a local network — so your providers, your county and your prescriptions matter.
Medigap pairs with Original Medicare and lets you see any provider nationwide that accepts Medicare — MUSC, Prisma, Duke or Emory across the line, or the hospital in your county seat.
Sumter County typically offers a moderate Medicare Advantage menu, every Medigap carrier in South Carolina, and the full Part D lineup, set by ZIP code and changing each plan year.
I have TRICARE For Life from Shaw. Do I need a Medigap policy or Part D?
Usually neither. TFL pays secondary to Medicare and its pharmacy is creditable drug coverage. An MA-only Advantage plan can add dental or vision without duplicating your drug benefit. See our Shaw Air Force Base page.
How much does your help cost?
Nothing. Independent agents are paid by the carriers when you enroll, so comparing plans and reviewing your coverage each year is free to you.
