The Pee Dee: what shapes the choice here
The Pee Dee is hospital-town country: Florence anchors the region with McLeod Regional Medical Center and MUSC Health Florence, and the counties around it lean on those two systems, plus McLeod’s smaller hospitals in Dillon, Cheraw and Manning, MUSC’s in Marion and Kingstree, and Carolina Pines in Hartsville, for anything beyond primary care. Advantage menus are shorter here than on the coast, and a plan that looks fine in Florence may not include the hospital in your own county.
Many Pee Dee families also qualify for Healthy Connections Medicaid alongside Medicare, which makes the Medicare Savings Programs and the D-SNPs that replaced Healthy Connections Prime a bigger part of the conversation here than in the metros. We compare what is sold at your address and check what you qualify for.
What to watch: Florence is the Pee Dee’s medical hub and has a moderate Advantage menu. The counties around it — Marlboro, Dillon, Williamsburg — have some of the thinnest menus in the state, and a plan’s network has to reach McLeod or MUSC in Florence to be useful. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy covers both without a network, which is why so many families out here keep one.
Counties: Florence, Darlington, Dillon, Marion, Marlboro, Williamsburg.
