Medicare in the region
Sumter is an Air Force town, and a lot of its Medicare decisions begin with TRICARE For Life: retirees from Shaw reach 65 with a supplement-like layer and creditable drug coverage already in place, so the live question is whether an MA-only Advantage plan’s dental and vision extras are worth having. Veterans without TFL use the Columbia VA system, and for them the Part B timing rule matters most.
For civilian retirees the region is one hospital per county — Prisma Health Tuomey in Sumter, MUSC Health Kershaw in Camden, McLeod Health Clarendon in Manning — with Columbia’s systems within an hour. Whether an Advantage plan’s network reaches both your local hospital and a Columbia specialist is the first thing we check; a Medigap policy removes the question.
What shapes the choice here: Sumter’s Medicare population includes a large Air Force retiree community from Shaw, for whom TRICARE For Life usually makes a Medigap policy and a Part D plan unnecessary. For everyone else the menu is moderate and the care map is one hospital per county, with Columbia’s systems an hour away.

Your options
All-in-one Part C plans, often $0 premium, that use a local network — so your providers, your county and your prescriptions matter.
How Advantage worksMedigap pairs with Original Medicare and lets you see any provider nationwide that accepts Medicare — MUSC, Prisma, Duke or Emory across the line, or the hospital in your county seat.
How Medigap worksStandalone drug coverage chosen around your medications and pharmacy. 2026 out-of-pocket cap: $2,100.
How Part D worksAdvantage plans built for a chronic condition, for nursing-facility care, or for people with both Medicare and Healthy Connections Medicaid.
About SNPsQuestions from the Sumter area
Sumter and Kershaw counties typically offer a moderate Medicare Advantage menu, every Medigap carrier in South Carolina, and the full Part D lineup. Clarendon and Lee counties have fewer Advantage plans. Availability is set by county and changes each plan year.
With TFL you already have a supplement-like layer and creditable drug coverage, so a Medigap policy and a Part D plan are usually unnecessary. An MA-only Advantage plan can add dental or vision without duplicating drug coverage. See our Shaw Air Force Base and Veterans pages.
Nothing. Independent agents are paid by the carriers when you enroll, so comparing plans and reviewing your coverage each year is free to you.
