Medicare near Shaw Air Force Base (Sumter)
Sumter County’s Medicare population includes thousands of Air Force retirees and spouses, and most of them reach 65 with TRICARE For Life waiting. TFL requires Medicare Parts A and B and then pays secondary to Medicare, so a Medigap policy is usually unnecessary; its pharmacy is creditable, so a Part D plan usually is too. What is left to decide is whether an MA-only Advantage plan’s dental, vision and hearing extras are worth having, and whether its network reaches Prisma Health Tuomey and the Columbia specialists you may need.
Veterans without TRICARE use the Columbia VA Health Care System, and for them the Part B timing rule is the one that matters: VA care is not creditable for Part B. The 20th Medical Group clinic on base continues to see retirees on a space-available basis; it is not a substitute for Medicare.
