East Texas & the Piney Woods: what shapes the choice here
East Texas is hospital-town country: Tyler and Longview anchor the region with UT Health East Texas, Christus and Longview Regional, and the counties around them lean on those systems for anything beyond primary care. Advantage menus are shorter here than in the metros and shrank in places for 2026, which is where Original Medicare with a Medigap policy earns its keep.
Many East Texans also carry VA benefits through the Overton and Tyler clinics and the Shreveport VA across the line; how those coordinate with Medicare is on our Veterans page.
What to watch: East Texas has more retirees per county than most of the state and fewer carriers per county. Several rural East Texas counties saw Advantage plans withdrawn for 2026; if yours did, the guaranteed-issue window to buy a Medigap policy is time-limited.
Counties: Smith, Gregg, Harrison, Angelina, Nacogdoches, Bowie, Cherokee, Henderson, Rusk, Panola, Shelby, Polk, Anderson.
