Medicare in the region

Northwest Indiana & the Region: what shapes the choice here

The Region has a deep Advantage menu in Lake and Porter counties and a care map divided among Methodist Hospitals, Community Healthcare System and Franciscan Health, each of which signs its own contracts. Franciscan’s new Crown Point hospital and Community’s Munster campus anchor the south suburbs; Methodist’s Northlake campus serves Gary; and for anything the Region does not do, Chicago is forty minutes up the Skyway — if your plan reaches it.

Retiree plans matter more here than almost anywhere in Indiana: steelworker and union trusts, railroad retirement, municipal plans. Whether to keep one, and what it becomes at 65, is usually the first question we answer for a Region family.

Local wrinkle: a lot of Region residents see specialists in Chicago. With Original Medicare and a Medigap policy that is simply covered. With an Advantage plan it depends on whether the Illinois provider is in the network, which some Indiana plans include and most do not. Many Region retirees also carry a union or steel-company retiree plan, which needs its own look before you change anything.

Counties: Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Jasper, Newton, Starke, Pulaski.

Health systems

  • Methodist Hospitals (Northlake in Gary, Southlake in Merrillville)
  • Community Healthcare System (Community Hospital, Munster)
  • Franciscan Health (Crown Point, Munster, Michigan City)
  • Northwest Health (Porter in Valparaiso, La Porte, Starke)
  • Chicago-area hospitals across the state line (network-dependent)

Each contracts differently with each plan; we check your doctors first.

Your options

Which kind of plan fits you?

Medicare Advantage

All-in-one Part C plans, often $0 premium, that use a network — so whether your doctors are IU Health, Ascension St. Vincent, Community, Franciscan, Parkview or Deaconess matters.

How Advantage works

Medicare Supplement

Medigap pairs with Original Medicare and lets you see any provider nationwide that accepts Medicare — in Indianapolis, in Louisville or Chicago, or in Florida for the winter. Indiana now has a birthday rule for switching.

How Medigap works

Part D drug plans

Standalone drug coverage chosen around your medications and pharmacy. 2026 out-of-pocket cap: $2,100. HoosierRx can help with the premium.

How Part D works

Special Needs Plans

Advantage plans built for a chronic condition, for nursing-facility care, or for people with both Medicare and Indiana Medicaid through PathWays for Aging.

Questions from the Region

Frequently asked questions

Which Medicare plans are available in Lake County?

Lake County typically offers a wide Medicare Advantage menu, every Medigap carrier in Indiana, and the full Part D lineup. Porter and LaPorte counties are similar; Jasper, Newton, Starke and Pulaski have fewer Advantage plans. We compare what is sold at your address.

Can I use a Chicago hospital with an Indiana plan?

With Original Medicare and a Medigap policy, yes — any Illinois provider that accepts Medicare is covered. With a Medicare Advantage plan, only if that provider is in the plan’s network, which we confirm before you enroll.

How much does your help cost?

Nothing. Independent agents are paid by the carriers when you enroll, so comparing plans and reviewing your coverage each year is free to you.
