Indianapolis Metro & Central Indiana: what shapes the choice here

More than a fifth of Indiana’s Medicare beneficiaries live in the Indianapolis metro, and the plan menu shows it: dozens of Medicare Advantage plans in Marion and Hamilton counties, every Medigap carrier licensed in Indiana, and the full Part D lineup. The trade-off is that central Indiana’s care is organized into large systems that contract separately — IU Health, Ascension St. Vincent, Community, Franciscan and Eskenazi — so a $0-premium plan that includes IU Health Methodist may exclude Community North, or the reverse.

Outside the beltway the menu thins a little but the systems follow: Ascension St. Vincent and Community in Kokomo and Anderson, Riverview in Noblesville, Johnson Memorial in Franklin. We compare what is sold at your ZIP code, confirm your doctors and pharmacy, and set Advantage beside a Medigap policy — which, with Indiana’s new birthday rule, you can now re-shop every year.

What changed for 2026: IU Health Plans, the Advantage plan built on the IU Health system that many central Indiana retirees chose for that reason, was bought by Elevance Health and its members received Anthem plans for 2026. If that was you, confirm your IU Health doctors and everyone else are in the new plan. Anthem, Humana, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna and Wellcare each contract with the five systems differently.

Counties: Marion, Hamilton, Hendricks, Johnson, Hancock, Boone, Morgan, Shelby, Madison, Howard, Tipton, Clinton, Putnam.

Your options

Which kind of plan fits you?

Medicare Advantage

All-in-one Part C plans, often $0 premium, that use a network — so whether your doctors are IU Health, Ascension St. Vincent, Community, Franciscan, Parkview or Deaconess matters.

How Advantage works

Medicare Supplement

Medigap pairs with Original Medicare and lets you see any provider nationwide that accepts Medicare — in Indianapolis, in Louisville or Chicago, or in Florida for the winter. Indiana now has a birthday rule for switching.

How Medigap works

Part D drug plans

Standalone drug coverage chosen around your medications and pharmacy. 2026 out-of-pocket cap: $2,100. HoosierRx can help with the premium.

How Part D works

Special Needs Plans

Advantage plans built for a chronic condition, for nursing-facility care, or for people with both Medicare and Indiana Medicaid through PathWays for Aging.

Questions from Central Indiana

Frequently asked questions

Which Medicare plans are available in Indianapolis?

Marion County typically has the widest choice in Indiana: dozens of Medicare Advantage plans from Anthem, Humana, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Wellcare and others, every Medigap carrier in the state, and all standalone Part D plans. Availability is set by county and ZIP code and changes each plan year.

Are IU Health and Ascension St. Vincent in the same Advantage plans?

Rarely both in every plan. Each system contracts with some carriers and not others, and the lists change each October. With Original Medicare and a Medigap policy there is no network to check. We confirm your doctors before you enroll.

How much does your help cost?

Nothing. Independent agents are paid by the carriers when you enroll, so comparing plans and reviewing your coverage each year is free to you.
